Amazing Paint! by Becca Heddle

Next steps: find websites based on subjects of interest to the pupils and encourage pupils to read texts closely to find evidence.

Ideas
1. Ask pupils to scan the text to list different materials used to make pictures, e.g. chalk, coloured earth, etc. Ask them to note the page number where each piece of information can be found.
2. Pupils scan to find the colour names ultramarine (page 8), vermilion (page 9) and cobalt (page 11). They use dictionaries to find and write down definitions of these words, then appropriate reference books to add more artists' colour names to their list.
3. Ask pupils to choose an artist mentioned in the book, then use a search engine or the school library to find more pictures by that artist. Ask pupils to say what they like about the paintings.
4. Ask pupils to write How did... ? questions, e.g. How did artists once make blue paint called ultramarine? They should keep a note of the page that contains the answer. In pairs, partners challenge each other to find the answers.
