Dragon Poems chosen by John Foster

Next steps: find accessible poems on topics of particular interest and begin to discuss their meaning.

Ideas
1. Read 'St George and the Dragon' (page 8). Ask pupils to tell you what happens in the poem, then say what they thought would happen when St George met a dragon.
2. Read 'Storm' (page 15). Ask pupils to explain why the storm is like a dragon. Compare other objects with a dragon, e.g. a fire-engine, a rocket. Ask pupils to write their own poems.
3. Read 'No Smoking' (page 16) and 'St George and the Dragon' (page 8). Both dragons are unexpectedly gentle. Ask pupils to write poems where a gentle creature is surprisingly fierce.
4. Ask four pupils to learn two verses each of 'Dragon' (pages 2-3) by heart. Have fun presenting the poem to the class from memory.
