Amy the Hedgehog Girl by John Coldwell

Next steps: continue to read and enjoy stories, but look more closely for detail and evidence when answering questions.

Ideas
1. Ask each pupil to write four questions about Mr Peck. Tell them to make sure they know which page has the answer to each question. They ask each other the questions and check the answers.
2. Ask each pupil to find one fact about hedgehogs, and to read out the relevant sentence from the text. Together, make two lists: one of information special to this story, and one of facts that are always true about hedgehogs.
3. Discuss Mr Peck's behaviour at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of the story. Ask pupils to explain how the change took place.
4. Find two incidents where Amy stood up to Mr Peck. Ask pupils to use their own experiences to discuss whether it is always easy to argue with adults.
