Gandhi by Pratima Mitchell

Next steps: find biographies of interest. Read texts closely to find evidence.

Ideas
1. Read the summary of Gandhi's life in the blurb on the back cover. Read pages 8 and 9. Ask pupils to find the incident that made Gandhi want to change life in India. Find Gandhi's unique message on page 12.
2. Ask pupils to read pages 16 and 17. List the main facts together, then ask pupils to write the story of Shukla, including Gandhi's role, in their own words.
3. Ask pupils to work with a partner to scan the text for dates, and note each date and the event described. Together, create a timeline showing the main events in Gandhi's life.
4. Read about Gandhi's time in prison on page 24. Use the incidents on pages 19 and 20 to write an explanation of the peaceful ways Gandhi defied the British.
