Cutters and Crushers by Claire Llewellyn

Next steps: find websites based on subjects of interest to the pupils and encourage pupils to read texts closely to find evidence.

Ideas
1. Ask pupils to scan the text for 'Word stretcher' boxes. Ask them to make a note of the definitions they find. Discuss the definitions and use the book to find examples of each type of animal.
2. Ask pupils to use the 'Tooth Talk' boxes to create quiz questions, e.g. How heavy is an elephant's molar? (page 9). Ask pupils to answer each other's questions by scanning the text for the 'Tooth Talk' boxes.
3. Ask pupils to type 'carnivore images' into a search engine. Ask them to predict the kinds of animals they will see. Ask them to print their favourite carnivore image and explain their choice.
4. Ask pupils to find advice on the Internet about keeping teeth healthy. Type 'healthy teeth' into a search box. Ask them to make notes, then read their advice to the class.
