| 1. | Read the beginning of Chapter 1. Notice that this is a first person account. Discuss autobiographies, but notice that this is not written by Beckwourth himself. Ask pupils to find examples of biographies and autobiographies in your library. |
| 2. | Use the Contents list to predict what might happen to Beckwourth and what the reader will find out. Scan the pictures in each chapter to add to the predictions. |
| 3. | Ask pupils to read silently. At the end of each chapter, ask them to work in pairs to note where Beckwourth was living and what he was doing, and add any dates mentioned. |
| 4. | Ask pupils to use the story to write a brief biography of Tomahawk Beckwourth. Remind them to look back at the text to check dates, places and information. |
