Ideas
1. Read pages 6 and 7 together. Notice how a kilometre is described by giving examples. Ask pupils to describe some measurements using examples, including some examples in the classroom.
2. Ask pupils to find photographs, diagrams and drawings being used to clarify explanations in the book. Read the accompanying text and talk about what makes a clear explanation. Ask pupils to use maps or diagrams to describe a route around the school.
3. Find maps of pupils' homes on the Internet, e.g. by typing postcodes into an online mapping website. Explore the maps, using different scales and ways to navigate to adjoining maps. Discuss when online maps might be useful.
4. Read about the Degree Confluence Project on pages 22-29. Ask pairs to create an explanation of this project for someone who has never heard of it. Remind them pictures and diagrams can help them explain. Pupils could present their explanation to another c
