Eyes of Every Shape and Size by Elspeth Graham

Next steps: look at different information texts and websites and how they are presented. Try to identify features of an explanation.

Ideas
1. Ask pupils to scan the text for words in bold. Find these words in the glossary on page 30. Discuss why a glossary is useful. Ask pupils to write glossary definitions for more words from the text, e.g. disguise, focus.
2. Ask: Are illustrations important? Devise a test, e.g. pupils listen as you read pages 6-7. Ask questions about the information. Next, ask pupils to read and discuss pages 6-7. Ask the questions again. Draw conclusions about how illustrations help.
3. Help pupils to discover the main adaptations for seeing underwater (pages 16-17) and at night (pages 20-23). Ask them to make notes from the text, then explain the adaptations in their own words.
4. Ask pupils to use the book to choose an aspect of animal eyes to explain to the class. Suggest that pupils type 'animal eyes images' into a search engine to find pictures to illustrate their explanation.
