What's Left Behind? By Becca Heddle

Next steps: look at different information texts and learn the difference between information, advice and instruction.

Ideas
1. Ask pupils to read the Contents. Can they identify a page which will contain instructions? Can they find a personal account? Discuss two or three other headings and ask pupils to predict what they will find out on those pages.
2. Read pages 4-5 and page 30. Ask pupils to list points that give advice about discovering the past. Ask them to write advice for other children who want to know about the past.
3. Read 'How to make a mummy' on pages 20-21. Find sequencing words: first, now, etc. Find command words: wash, cut, etc. Ask pairs to discuss and write the instructions as numbered points.
4. Ask pupils to choose three or four items listed in the index. Ask them to look up each item and write a paragraph explaining in their own words what they have learned.
