Explosions by Becca Heddle

Next steps: look at different information texts and learn the difference between information, advice and instruction.

Ideas
1. Ask pupils to use the Contents to predict where information is in the book, e.g. Which page will tell you the history of fireworks? Ask pupils to choose a topic they find interesting, then explain what they have found out.
2. Read 'Too dangerous?' on page 14. Ask pupils to decide whether this page gives instructions or advice. Discuss the main features of each type of writing. Ask pupils to write advice about fireworks for younger children.
3. Read the account of 'Setting up a display' on pages 12-13. Ask pupils to work in pairs to rewrite the main points as numbered instructions: 'How to Set Up a Firework Display'.
4. Ask pupils to choose a topic from the book to explain. Remind them to make notes, and to use pictures and diagrams to make the explanation clear. They present their explanations to the group. Discuss which were clearest, and why.
