Next steps: practise going back to the text to find evidence to support their answers to questions.
Ideas | |
| 1. | Give pupils a choice of topics not specifically listed, e.g. invertebrate eyes, birds' eyes. Ask them to use the book to write five questions relevant to their topic. |
| 2. | After reading a double page spread with an individual or a group, ask questions for the pupil to find the answer in the text, e.g. Which creature had a third eye on the top of its head? (page 10). |
| 3. | Ask pupils, in pairs, to choose a topic from the Contents page. Ask them to write an explanation in their own words. Ask them to check their work for clarity before presenting their explanation to the group. |
| 4. | Notice how an explanation is always illustrated by examples. Ask pupils to choose four or five topics from the Contents, write each topic title, then list the examples given. Discuss the usefulness of this as a way of taking notes. |
