Climbing in the Dark by Nick Warburton

Next steps: continue to read and enjoy stories, discussing characters' feelings and motivation.

Ideas
1. Talk about Tess's feelings on her first day. Find the words that show she feels small and scared. Find the words that describe Will in Chapters 2 and 3.
2. Discuss Harriet's character. Ask pupils to write questions, e.g. Was she a spoilt, rich child? Why was she afraid of Will? Read the questions aloud and answer them together, using evidence from the story.
3. Ask pupils to rewrite the story of Will's rescue using the present tense. They should show how brave Tess had to be, and how she felt when she was in Mr Fry's house.
4. Ask a volunteer to be in the hot seat as Will. Ask Will questions about his life so far, referring to both the bad and the good things that have happened to him.
