The Ghosts of Bracken Hill by Anne Mackintosh

Next steps: continue to read and enjoy stories, discussing characters' feelings and motivation.

Ideas
1. Notice the main feelings of Tom in each chapter and make notes. Notice his relationship with William and how it changes throughout the story.
2. Write a list of the mysteries in the story as questions, e.g. Why was Mum angry when Tom mentioned a dog at the beginning of the story? After reading, answer all the questions.
3. Talk about the meaning of the cold wind in the story, and why it would never come again. Ask pupils to write a mystery story where a cold wind signals a ghostly presence.
4. Compare Tom and William and say which you would prefer to have as a friend and why.
