Next steps: continue to read and discuss a wide range of stories of different types, including some with more difficult themes and narrative techniques.
Ideas | |
| 1. | Make a list of characters and descriptions that create a magical atmosphere in the story, e.g. wizard, raven. Discuss which you might normally expect to find in a magical story and which are more unusual, e.g. the jar of tears. |
| 2. | Make a character profile of each boy using words from descriptions and evidence from their behaviour in the book. Write a short summary comparing the three characters. |
| 3. | Discuss the courage of the three boys, giving examples from the story. Ask pupils to write any story where the main character shows great courage. |
| 4. | Ask volunteers to be Shaun, Joe and Michael in the hot seat. Give them time to prepare, or help by listing the achievements of each boy. Pupils ask questions about each boy's role in the adventure. |
