A-Z of Survival by Matt Minshall

Next steps: begin to look at different information texts, for example instructions and advice, and discuss how these texts are different from fiction texts that they are currently reading.

Ideas
1. Discuss the advantages of an A-Z layout in an information book. Think of other books where information is arranged alphabetically. Ask pupils to find three survival facts each and present them as a poster.
2. Read 'Stay Clean' on page 7. Discuss the advice. Ask pupils to work in pairs to find and list three good ideas for ways to keep clean, and three warnings. Notice how the style of writing is different from instructions.
3. Read 'Yardstick' on page 23. Discuss how information is presented, i.e. what a yardstick is for, then instructions. Ask pupils to follow the instructions, then to rewrite them in their own words, adding tips to deal with any problems they found.
4. Ask pupils to scan the book and note two entries that mainly give advice, two that mainly give information and two that mainly give instructions. Discuss differences in presentation and language. Agree key points for identifying each type of information.
