Snowblind by Paul Stewart

Next steps: continue to read and discuss a wide range of stories of different types, including some with more difficult themes and narrative techniques.

Ideas
1. List phrases related to the Arctic setting for this story, e.g. aurora borealis. Make another list related to the laboratory setting. Discuss the use of accurate vocabulary in setting a scene.
2. Use pupils' prior knowledge to discuss the issues raised by the story, including the extinction of some species and the ability to clone them.
3. Find examples in the text that show how the author creates tension in the reader's mind, and anxiety for the safety of the characters.
4. Talk about the meaning of the word 'snowblind'. Ask pupils to write a story set in a hostile environment, describing the difficulties of survival.
