Bertha's Secret Battle by John Coldwell, adapted by David Calcutt

Next steps: using playscripts of interest, discuss what characters are like and what evidence is used to make such deductions.

Ideas
1. Ask pupils what they find out about the twins in Scene 1. Discuss how the characters' names and style of dress reflect their behaviour.
2. Ask pupils to explain what happens in Scene 5. Talk about Fiona's feelings. Ask pupils to refer to their own experiences of situations where people are judged on appearance.
3. After reading the play, talk about Bertha's feelings and the way she solved the problem. List the characteristics of both wrestlers, referring to the text for exact quotations.
4. Ask pupils to write about the characters, answering one of these questions: Was Fiona really fair? or Was it right to call Bertha a bone-cruncher?
