Next steps: look again at these texts, and others, and discuss how playscripts are different from stories.
Ideas | |
| 1. | Choose two volunteers to be the characters in Scene 1. Ask pupils to read the paragraph that sets the scene. Discuss the function of the words in brackets in the dialogue. The actors read the scene aloud. Change actors and read again. |
| 2. | Ask pupils to write a synopsis of each scene in one or two sentences. Next, ask them to compare their sentences with a partner to check that the main points have been included. They amend their writing as necessary. |
| 3. | Practise reading the play in a group. Notice how stage directions affect expression when reading. Remind pupils to be ready to read at the right moment. Perform the play to the rest of the class. |
| 4. | In Scene 2, discuss how the stage directions reflect the characters' emotions. Ask children to practise reading the lines with appropriate expression. Remind them to take stage directions into account when reading the play. |
