Bertie Wiggins' Amazing Ears by David Cox and Erica James, adapted by David Calcutt

Next steps: discuss how a character's motivation is often reflected in what they say then consider other occasions when it may not be, and why.

Ideas
1. List what you find out about Bertie during the play. Find the page with the evidence each time. Ask pupils to discuss whether they would like Bertie for a friend.
2. Find examples where characters take no notice of Bertie and where they do not tell the truth. Discuss the reasons for this.
3. Discuss the royal children and the reason they came to the television studio. Make inferences as to what has happened in the past and why the children do not want to appear on television.
4. Read pages 40-47. Ask volunteers to be the royal children in the hot seat. Pupils ask them questions about their lives. Characters answer by using what they know from the play and what they deduce from the behaviour of the king.
